Anti-vibration gloves: the honest guide
Most gloves sold as “anti-vibration” do far less than the name promises, and the safety body that regulates this is blunt about it. Here is what the certification actually means, what genuinely protects your hands, and the short list worth buying if you decide to.

Read this before you spend a penny
There is a whole shelf of gloves marketed for vibration, and a tradesperson could be forgiven for thinking a pair labelled “anti-vibration” with a CE or UKCA mark must protect them. The regulator disagrees.
The HSE’s position is about as direct as official guidance gets: anti-vibration gloves are not an effective measure against hand-arm vibration, and no gloves give effective protection against vibration from hand-held tools. They are not even mentioned in the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005. In some cases a glove can make matters worse, because a thicker, stiffer glove makes you grip harder, and more grip force means more fatigue and more vibration into the hand.
It comes down to physics, and to the small print of the standard.
To carry the “anti-vibration” label legally, a glove is tested to EN ISO 10819. It has to pass two tests. In the medium frequency range, 31.5 to 200 Hz, it must not amplify the vibration (a score under 1.0). In the high frequency range, 200 to 1250 Hz, it must cut vibration by at least 40 percent (a score under 0.6).
Read that again. In the medium range, the bar is simply that the glove does not make things worse. The real protection only kicks in at high frequencies. The trouble is that the tools doing the worst HAVS damage — breakers, compactors, heavy hammer drills — do most of their harm at the low end, where lab studies show a glove provides no useful isolation at all. So the certification is real, but it certifies protection in the frequencies that hurt you least.
A genuinely certified glove will publish its numbers. The Portwest A790, for example, scrapes through at 0.865 medium and 0.598 high. Passing, but barely, and only in the range that matters least.
The Payback Score, flipped
Everywhere else on this site the maths favours buying the kit. Here it does not. A lighter, lower-vibration tool or twenty minutes less trigger time has a real payback. A pair of gloves has a payback of roughly zero against HAVS, and worse than zero if it sells you false confidence. The cheapest thing on this page is the gloves. The most valuable is the trigger-time habit.
What actually protects your hands
This is where the money and the effort should go. None of it is glamorous, all of it works.
- Use a lower-vibration tool. A newer, well-maintained, balanced tool vibrates far less than a worn one. Sharp bits, fresh discs and good bearings cut vibration at the source. This is the single biggest lever.
- Spend less time on the trigger. Vibration exposure is measured over time. The HSE sets an exposure action value of 2.5 m/s² over an eight-hour day, and a hard limit of 5. Halving your trigger time does more than any glove ever will. Swap tasks, share the buzzy jobs out, take the breaks.
- Keep your hands warm and dry. Cold hands suffer worse, because HAVS is partly a circulation problem. This is the one job a glove does honestly, so a warm, well-fitting glove beats a thin “anti-vibration” one for most people most of the time.
- Grip lighter. A glove with a grippy palm lets you hold the tool securely without throttling it. Less squeeze, less strain.
- Catch it early. The first signs are tingling or numbness in the fingers, fingers going white in the cold, or losing grip and dexterity. If any of that sounds familiar, see your GP or occupational health. Caught early, removing the exposure can stop it getting worse. Left alone, the damage is permanent.

What a glove can legitimately do, and how to choose one
If you work in the cold, or a grippier palm would let you ease off your grip, a glove is worth having. Just buy it for warmth and grip, not for a vibration miracle. When you choose:
- Look for genuine EN ISO 10819:2013 certification with published transmissibility numbers, as a floor, not a guarantee.
- Make sure it fits. A loose glove kills what little damping there is and makes you grip harder.
- Favour warmth and a grippy palm over thick padding. Thick is not the same as protective, and thick costs you dexterity.
- Replace it when the palm hardens or packs down. A compressed pad does nothing.

Do not confuse the two. Impact gloves like the Mechanix M-Pact have a tough knuckle guard and are excellent at stopping knocks and crushes. They are not anti-vibration gloves and most are not certified to EN ISO 10819. A TPR knuckle does nothing for HAVS.

Quick answers
Do anti-vibration gloves actually work?
Not against HAVS. The HSE is clear that no glove gives effective protection from tool vibration, and lab testing shows they do little at the low frequencies that cause the worst damage. What they can do is keep your hands warm and help you grip with less force, which both genuinely help. Buy them for that, not as a cure.
What does EN ISO 10819 certification guarantee?
Less than you would think. It guarantees the glove does not amplify medium-frequency vibration and cuts high-frequency vibration by at least 40 percent. It says nothing useful about the low frequencies where breakers and heavy hammer drills do their damage.
Are Mechanix or other impact gloves anti-vibration?
No. Impact gloves protect against knocks, crushes and abrasion. That is a different job, and most are not certified to the vibration standard. Do not rely on a knuckle guard to protect against HAVS.
What actually reduces my risk of HAVS?
A lower-vibration, well-maintained tool, sharp consumables, and less time on the trigger. Keep your hands warm, share out the buzzy jobs, and get checked if you notice tingling or white fingers. Those are the controls that work.
How do I know if vibration is already harming me?
Early signs are tingling or numbness in the fingers, fingers going white and painful in the cold, and losing grip or fine control. If you notice any of these, see your GP or occupational health. Early action can stop it progressing; ignored, the damage does not reverse.
Before you buy. If your hands are cold, buy a warm, well-fitting, grippy glove and get on with it. If your hands are buzzing after a day on the tools, the glove is not the answer. Look at the tool and the hours. That is where your hands are won or lost.
